Keeping your pet hydrated 💧
Keeping your pets hydrated is as crucial as providing them with a nutritious diet. This simple aspect of pet care is pivotal in ensuring your furry friends lead happy, active, and healthy lives. From moisturising the air in their lungs and regulating body temperature to supporting nervous system function, hydration performs countless functions for pets’ bodies.
Dehydration is common during hot weather, and it can quickly turn deadly. Keeping your pet’s bowl filled with cool, clean water is a crucial step in warding off this problem. As a pet parent, it’s up to you to keep your four-legged family member well-hydrated and to recognise the early warning signs of dehydration.
Signs of dehydration 🥵
Here are some techniques and symptoms of how to tell if your pet is dehydrated. One technique, called the ‘skin turgor test’, is to gently pinch and lift the skin between your dog or cat’s shoulder blades and then release it – if they are well hydrated, the skin will quickly return to its normal position but in a dehydrated animal, it will remain ‘tented’.
Another is to look at your pet’s gums – they should be shiny and feel moist when you touch them with your finger. In animals who are dehydrated, the gums appear dry and will be sticky to touch.
- Loss of energy
- Weakness
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Dry, sticky gums
- Panting
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Sunken eyes
- Depression

When the seasons change and the weather heats up, it’s not the only thing the weather has an effect on. The water in your pet’s bowl also warms up making it undesirable to drink and often left untouched all day. But, all is not lost. Add a piece of Rock Sulphur, about the size of a brazil nut, to your pet’s drinking water and, hey presto, delicious, cool drinking water.
Not only will this magic little rock cool down water, it is packed with natural salts and minerals and will have a cooling effect on your pet’s blood making the heat of the summer more bearable. https://www.farmandpetplace.co.uk/shop/products/pet/dog/dog-summer/rock-sulphur.html
